Good hand hygiene and generally available surface disinfectants also help to prevent swine flu. 

The latest pandemic threat is called H1N1, a combination of influenza viruses found in birds, pigs and humans.  It is a sub-type of the influenza A virus, as was the Spanish flu (1918-1920). Information about the spread of the virus is being continuously updated. The situation in Finland is being monitored by the National Institute for Health and Welfare (THL), which was formerly the National Public Health Institute. 

Influenza viruses spread as droplet and contact infections. Good hand hygiene prevents the virus from spreading through contact. Use of hand rinse products in an epidemic is an excellent way of protecting yourself and those close to you from infections. Alcohol-based disinfectant rinses are very effective on influenza viruses. Extra attention should also be paid to surface hygiene during epidemics. All general disinfectant agents destroy influenza viruses without difficulty.

A national preparedness plan has been made for pandemics. It is estimated that about one-third of the population will fall ill during a pandemic, some with only mild symptoms.  If the H1N1 virus becomes established in Finland, there is sufficient medication in storage for this type of influenza.
